Milan Hill State Park – The Past and the Future
The 100 acre park was purchased by the State of New Hampshire from the Brown Company of Berlin in 1934 and has been used as a picnic area and campground since state purchase. The present fire tower was built in 1932 and had been used as an air raid warning station during World War II.
Please note: The park will be closed to the public from May 1, 2008 through September 30, 2008, due to a forest management operation and a park construction project. Unidentified hazards and unsigned relocation of roads and trails may be present which could create difficulties and safety concerns.
Park Redevelopment
With funding from the state’s capital budget, the Division of Parks and Recreation will be installing three camping yurts and revitalizing the existing campsites and the picnic area. The water system will be repaired and a new septic system installed to service the bath house. In addition the park buildings will be painted and roofed.
Forest Management
The last timber sale occurred in 1995-1996. During this timber sale the summit of Milan Hill was cleared, stumped and seeded to improve the line of site in all directions for the fire tower. The 2008 timber operation has four primary objectives and will most likely occur in July and August:
1. Release mixed white/red pine, hard and softwood regeneration that was established during the 1995-96 crop tree release,
2. Regenerate northern hardwood species (sugar/red maple, white ash, beech, white and yellow birch) in a northern hardwood stand that was thinned in 1995-96 and then damaged by the 1998 ice storm,
3. Regenerate softwood (spruce/fir) adjacent to patch cuts that were successfully regenerated in the 1995-96 timber harvest, and
4. Clear skid trails to be constructed into multi-use recreational trails. Trails will be wide enough to groom cross country ski trails during the winter months.
